The women Afrobasket 2009 in Madagascar will be the first continental competition organised in this part of Africa (zone7 FIBA Africa).This African Feminin Championship will have two goals :
- The two finalist will qualify for the FIBA World Championship for Women in Czech Republic from September 23rd to October 3rd 2010.
- Promote basketball game in general and feminine basketball in particular in this part of Africa, two teams are representing the zone 7
Madagascar and Mauritius. We hope that will help basketball to developp in Africa Islands. Madagascar won the title in 1970 and would like to win it at home. In the last women Afrobasket in Senegal 2007 they were 10th on 12 participants.
Favourite teams
Senegal, the most crowned team in this competition with 9 titles out of 20 editions will come with the intention to win his tenth title after loosing the final at home in 2007.
Mali, the defending champion who won its first title in 2007 after 12 appearances in that championship.
Nigeria is the third favourite teams with two titles (2003 and 2005).
Beside Rwanda and Mauritius coming to the Women Afrobasket for the first time all the other teams are used to that competition:

Participations |
12 teams are expected and there will be two groups; A and B, each team will meet in their respective group.
After the group tour, the four first team of each group will qualify for the quarter final and the four other team will play classification games for the 9th to the 12th place.
Quarter finals
Game 1: B4 vs A1
Game 2: A4 vs B1
Game 3: B3 vs A2
Game 4: A3 vs B2
The four winners will qualify for for the semi finals and the loosers will play for the 5th to the 8th place.
Semi finals
Game 5: winner game 1 vs winner game 4
Game 6: winner game 2 vs winner game 3
The winners will qualify for the final and the loosers will play for the 3rd and 4th place.
Final
Game 7 : winner game 5 vs winner 6
The two teams will be qualify for FIBA Women World Championship 2010 in Czech Republic.
